AQ emphasizes answers, connects to questions, and taps into an ingrained belief that question and answer exchange is fundamental to communication. Although intuitive for the beginner to grasp, there are 5 High AQ practices that require knowledge, skill, and practice to become an expert.
You can leverage AQ to reframe your consulting, training, and coaching.
As a consultant you are in the business of helping clients ask and answer questions. For example, a client may ask, "Why do we need to change?" This can be answered with a story or theory answer.
The AQ framework can be used with clients to create a common language (questions + answers) to frame and discuss any topic (Change Management AQ, Sales AQ, Leadership AQ, or any topic you consult upon).
Taking a conversational approach to training, any training is a question-and-answer exchange. For example, a leadership training should address all important questions (why, what, and how) by providing six answers (story, metaphor, theory, concept, procedure, action).
The AQ framework can be used as an overlay to enhance any training or workshop topic. Prior to training all important questions and answers can be identified by a trainer. During training, a skilled facilitator will be able to apply the 5 High AQ practices for effective communication.
Coaches partner with clients to help them achieve their potential. Any issue can be framed in terms of AQ. For example, if a coachee’s problem is conflict with a subordinate, then the coachee needs to have a sense of why the conflict is occurring (as a theory answer), or what actions (an AQ answer) are triggering the conflict. So on and so forth, all six AQ answers (story, metaphor, theory, concept, procedure, action) have to be explored and understood by the coachee.
